Make Popcorn Healthier for You #unjunkyourjunkfood

popcorn comparison

We all look at the nutritional labels while grocery shopping because that is how we have been trained.  Think about how often you look at the ingredients?  I am sure if you have your ankle biter pulling on your arms and putting everything in your cart it is easy to get distracted and want to leave quickly!  Grocery shopping solo… priceless!

Unjunk Your Junk Food was a huge eye opener for me because I typically shop by price and not by labels.  I conducted a challenge after reading this book on popcorn.  I like my popcorn to go easy on any butter and my Husband cakes it on like he is giving himself an IV full of buttery goodness.  Going to the movies with him makes me nauseous from the amount of butter that he likes.

We are a big Orville Redenbacher’s household so I had his and hers popcorn in the cupboard for my taste test!

I popped my Natural popcorn according to the box and melted down 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave.  It only took 30 seconds for the oil to melt down.  This was my first time using coconut oil so I had no idea how this experiment would work!  I love the Orville Redenbacher’s Natural line!  I tried it once and pretty much said OK I will pay for this popcorn, but I digress.

I drizzled my oil on the kernels and gave it a taste!  Hmmm.. I think this is going to be an acquired taste because you can tell it isn’t the artery clogging, death by butter flavor.  I gave it a couple more snacks and decided I could see myself eating this.  I still prefer the just plain old Simply Salted flavor but it wasn’t me who was judging this test, it was Michael.

Michael got home from the gym and ate his dinner like a good Husband.  We had tacos and taco seasoning has MSG in it, ACK! One step at a time guys!  There are homemade versions out there in the blogosphere that I will whip up next time.  He eats his dinner and puts the baby to bed and finally notices the bowl of popcorn on the counter.

Husband: What’s this?
Wife: Popcorn.
Husband: I can see that but what did you do to it?
Wife: I made it healthier than butter popcorn while trying to make you like it.

Crunch, crunch, crunch as the wheels are turning in his head.  I always find myself holding my breath waiting for the verdict.  Then he speaks and starts to nod his head.

Husband: Not bad.
Wife: Really?!
Husband: Really.  It wouldn’t be my first choice when I am craving buttery popcorn but it isn’t bad.
Wife: I am really surpised you didn’t hate it.

Crunch, crunch, crunch.

I HIGHLY recommend buying Unjunk Your Junk Food because it has so many tips in it.  I have multiple pages folded down and so many ideas that I want to try from this book.  It goes through every junk food you might want to eat and shows you the bad one and why it is bad.  Then it shows you the good one and why it is good.  It is full of useful information, I promise!

I received this book in order to facilitate my review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

How To Be The Perfect Grandma Review & Giveaway

how to be the perfect grandma book

Do you remember the giveaway I posted about in a previous post for the book, How To Be The Perfect Grandma? With Mother’s Day right around the corner I thought this book would be the perfect addition to my Mom’s gift since this is her first Mother’s Day as a… Grandma!  You can try and win the gift pack for your special Grandma at the bottom of this review!

Bryna Nelson Paston wrote this book so well because I was cracking up throughout most of the book.  I want to point out the first ‘Rule’ that I was especially dying while reading, Rule 7.  Just in case you missed my post about it, Michael recently fell down the stairs.  Yes, the whole flight of stairs and you can read about it in this post.  Grandmas make mistakes too and she is honest about a big fall her little Grandchild took.  The really funny part is that her Son’s name is Michael and my Husband’s name is Michael so I could just picture him freaking out the same way!

The next rule I could totally relate to was about the In-Laws.  I really feel bad about this one but it is hard.  My Mom gets way more than Michael’s Mom and it started from the very beginning.  She was in the delivery room, she has gotten him overnight, she can have play dates and she can drive him without any worries of my own.  I can’t explain why but she is MY Mom so I trust her way more even though I know Michael’s Mom would do a good job.

Overall, this book is so entertaining and was a breeze to read.  I read it in just a few hours because I had an overtired baby situation to deal with in the middle of reviewing it.  I think it is written well and if you can’t relate to any one of the rules in it you are probably perfect and can just move on.  For the rest of us, put your feet up and grab your popcorn.  I really would recommend it to parents and Grandmothers.  Parents should read it to see what really goes on in a Grandmother’s head and Grandmothers should read so they can sit there nodding in agreement.

You can buy it on Amazon for $9.99 with free shipping and don’t forget to enter to win the prize pack below!

I received my own copy of the book in order to facilitate my review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Red & Yellow’s Noisy Night Book Review

Red & Yellow's Noisy Night Book

Everyone knows how important reading to children is and I wish I would have gotten more books for my baby shower.  I 100% recommend that any Mamas out there do the whole give a book instead of a card thing to build your book collection!  I will never turn down a chance to review a book for Baby Michael and this time we reviewed Red & Yellow’s Noisy Night by Josh Selig.

When I was reading the information on the jacket I realized that Josh Selig created Small Potatoes, 3rd & Bird and The Wonder Pets.  OK, so my life consists of watching Disney until the big kid shows come on and then switching it to Disney West Coast and watching the same shows all over again!  Woo Hoo I am a riot!  I ADORE Small Potatoes!  It is so silly but it is adorable and the little potatoes are so cute and I just love it.  Back on topic now…

I like Daddy and Michael to read books together because I think it is their special time since I am with Baby Michael all day long.  As you can see in the above picture, the artwork in the book is very simple and eye appealing.  I thought the drawings were cute and remind me a lot of Small Potatoes!

There is a good story line to this book that I hope Baby Michael understands when he gets older.  Shoot- I think it is a good reminder for Mommy and Daddy too!  Yellow and Red are the characters and they have to learn to compromise when it comes to bedtime.  As I am writing this I am not taking the lesson in this book to heart because Daddy Michael wants to go to bed and I am saying just a few more minutes!  What are the odds!?  In the end they figure out a solution to make both characters happy of course!

I think this is a great book to add to your collection! Pre-order your book on Amazon for $10.17! That is saving you 32% off of the cover price!  Don’t forget about the free shipping on Amazon!

Little Light Foundation is a non-profit charity  that helps children around the world with conflict resolution and respect.

Total Flirt Book Review

total flirt by violet blue

I was so excited to read this second book after reading Violet Blue’s last book!  If you missed that review check it out in my previous post.  Her writing style is playful and laid back so it is plenty of fun to read along.

Chapter 1 starts off with another quiz to see what your flirting style is.  I scored a Sweetheart!  She goes on to talk about turning on your ‘flirt mode’.  I was actually happy to see that there was a section in chapter 4 dedicated to online flirting!  With online dating and living our lives on the internet and social media I felt it was relevant.  I am a blogger!

This book is great for any female in the dating field!  Violet goes into just about every scenario you could imagine.  She gives examples of how to tell if he is interested, not interested, not worth your time or even spoken for.  Once again she is spot on with the details!

I remember when Michael and I went on our very first BLIND date.  He was the WORST EVER!  This poor man barely talked at all and his friends were trying to pick me up instead.  I am not kidding.  So I took control of the conversation and started my interrogation.  It was my mentality that I needed to know if he was going to be worth my time and he obviously passed.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book.  I am not the target audience for this book but as I read it I looked back on my dating period and thought it was very accurate.  Perhaps she has also written one for couples who have been together a while?  Flirting is a great way to spice things up since we get comfortable in our relationship and that leads to boredom.

Seal it with a Kiss Book Review

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner every one is getting ready for a big date, except us.  Since Michael and I have started dating we have never really done the whole Valentine’s Day thing.  I can tell you one thing about this romantic holiday though, and that is the perfect kiss can make the night.

Do you realize how long it took me to ‘train‘ Michael to kiss the way I want him to.  Who am I kidding, I still am!  I think I should leave this book in the bathroom and tell him he should read it!  Do you remember being a teen and wondering “am I doing this right?“   Now I do not recommend this book for teens but for couples who want a playful revamp in their relationship, I say go ahead!

My first impression of this book was that it was written very well.  Violet Blue writes playfully and has an entertaining style of writing.  In chapter 1 there is a fun little quiz, that had me chuckling through the whole thing, about your kissing style.  I received this:

Your kissing mantra is: “Hello- my name is Your Addiction”

The entertainment continued into chapter 2 and took your result from your quiz and gave you pointers based on your style.  When I say this book is entertaining I truly mean it!  I do think it is written more for women though.

As I continued on to chapter 3 she goes into some simple techniques that are very good recommendations.  Violet is such a descriptive writer and I can picture everything she is saying in my head.  I love it so far!

Chapter 4 starts off with descriptions of different types of men such as: Rock Star, Yuppie, Marketing Executive etc.  I would have to say that Michael probably falls into the romantic type kisser.  She brings up the different types of kisses and think she is spot on again.

Are you looking for new kissing techniques?  Then chapter 5 is for you because she is actually very detailed and talks about many different techniques.  I really need to give Michael this book to read.  :)

She shares a kissing do and don’t list in chapter 6.  Some of the items that made the list include: DO have clean teeth/moisturized lips and Don’t approach a kiss with an open mouth or extended tongue!

Violet even provides some tips for the dreaded beard burn in chapter 7, along with many other tips for your kissing session.  Some of the kissing games mentioned in chapter 9 I had never heard of!

Overall I enjoyed reading this book.  The laid back writing style made it a very easy read.  I read it cover to cover in about 3 hours!  Sure it is geared towards dating women but I think even couples who have been together a while could benefit from some new spice in their relationship.  If nothing else, you will get a good chuckle

  5. The First 8 Days Book for Parents Review

Have you ever wondered how else you can influence your child to make the right decisions or just be a better person?  Being a first time parent makes me wonder if my child will end up being one of the bullies in school or being bullied themselves.  I dealt with my fair share of both growing up and neither side is really enjoyable.

These children’s books by Hunter Darden have an extra message in them.  Gorgeous Georgia is a story about inner beauty and overall self esteem.  What girl don’t need more of that??  When we got this book in the mail Michael pulled it out and started reading to my belly because he was so excited to have a new book.  As we were reading it though he stopped and whispered to me ‘what are we trying to tell the kid?’ because it starts out with a VERY arrogant giraffe.  I just told him to keep reading because there is a moral to the story.  Sure enough when we were done reading to the baby he understood exactly what the moral was and thought it was a great book.

The second book that I got to review from Hunter is The Everlasting Snowman.  This book also has a great moral to the story and one that I feel I have followed most of my life, enjoy your life right now.  The Everlasting Snowman is a story of how a snowman family must enjoy their life and family because pretty soon they will melt away and live on forever in the future rains.  Hunter actually wrote this book to explain the death of her Father to her two kids.

The illustrator, Tamara Scantland Adams, did the whole book in what looks like watercolor paint.  This style really gave the book a softer and more serene feel to the whole story.

I did receive a copy of both of the books to help facilitate my review of them.  All opinions are 100% my own and weren’t influenced by the sponsor in anyway.

The First 8 Days Parenting Book Review

  5. The First 8 Days Book for Parents Review

The First 8 Days of Being a Mom. How to take care of You as well as your newborn.

As I progress further into this pregnancy all of these things are springing up on me that I had no idea came with pregnancy!  So I was excited to get to read a book dedicated to the first 8 days of being a Mom.  It is specific, easy to read and it isn’t a novel.

Did you know that in the Netherlands insurance covers someone to come home with you for the first 8 days?!  This nurse is specialized in taking care of you and your newborn so any worries you may have can rest for a good week!  I am going to have my Mother come help but she isn’t a spcialized nurse and she hasn’t raised a baby in 20 years so I would love to live in the Netherlands right now!  :)

This book starts with a great list of what you should take with you to the hospital.  That is such a good list because I see that question asked over and over again my new Mommies on the baby boards I frequent.  Day 1 describes everything from the signs of labor, what happens to Mom during and after delivery as well as your newborn on the first day.

In the section on Day 3 I loved the sentence talking about recovering after delivery.  “Recovering from a delivery is not a game and you don’t have to prove anything to anybody.  Everyone will recover in their own way.”  I tend to overdo things so this totally applies to me.

After she goes over the first 8 days she describes, with step by step pictures, changing diapers and bathing your baby.

My opinion of this book is very positive.  Being a new Mom myself I am very uncertain of everything and wonder how I am going to be able to do it all!  I hope I can breast feed so it helps my uterus contract more after the delivery!  This book gave me a great idea of what is going to happen in those exhausting days after I deliver this baby.  I am probably going to have my Mother read the book again just as a refresher for her too!

  5. The First 8 Days Book for Parents Review

How many of you can say that you own children’s books written by a 9 year old author?  I am one of those who can say that now!  The My Friend Paris books are written by a young girl who lives in the San Francisco area.  Currently she has 4 books published and 5 more in the works.

I am always thinking ahead about the big family we plan on having so I picked out two books to review, I’m Having Twins and My Twins are Coming Home.

I'm Having Twins

These books are simply adorable for little ones because it is all from their point of view, not ours.  One of the pages in the book I’m Having Twins book talks about how she feels HER twins moving inside her Mommy’s tummy and she wonders what they are doing in there.

My Twins are Coming Home

In her next book, My Twins are Coming Home, you can see her point of view waiting for the babies with Grandma and Grandpa and how Daddy tried to cook but it wasn’t as yummy as Mommy’s cooking.  She can’t wait to share a new blanket with the twins and how people sometimes bring her presents as well.

Michael and I thought these books were just adorable and he read them to my belly of course.  Some pages got a chuckle out of him and some pages got an ‘awww’ from him.  The illustrator that they picked to do the book did a great job on the books too.  They are a simple concept and a great way to start talking about what becoming a Big Sister/Brother really means.

If you want some free coloring pages to print out be sure to check out the ‘Free Stuff’ page on their website.  There is also a way to get free temporary tattoos and stickers just by sending a self addressed envelope to the address posted at this link.

I did receive one copy of each book for review purposes.  All opinions are 100% my own and weren’t influenced by the sponsor in anyway.

Don’t Throw Those Coupons Out Review & Giveaway! (Ends 3/27)

Don't Throw Those Coupons Away!: A Mom's Guide to Saving Money at the Grocery Store

I adore coupons and never thought that I would be able to score the deals that I do!  A lot of people ask ‘how do you do it’ and there are coupon classes popping up everywhere.  It was about time when the show Extreme Couponing aired on TLC.  Coupons are all the rage right now with the economy in the tank and unemployment rates through the roof.  I am so happy to see more and more people taking the extra effort to save thousands of dollars each year on a necessity, groceries.  The preface of this book even states on this SAHM needed to feed her family… it’s a simple concept really.

Don’t Throw Those Coupons Away is a quick guide on how they save you money, organizing your coupons, where to find them, stockpiling, strategy, rebates etc.  I like the book because it gives you more than just a snippet of the coupon world.  When you watch Extreme Couponing shows you only really see the end result because of time constraints of TV.

Did you know that Coca Cola was the first company to print and hand out coupons?  Chapter one goes through different types of coupons as well as a brief history of how they got started.

Chapter 2, 3 and 4 give you a great idea of coupon lingo and where to find the different coupons.  I think she did a fabulous job outlining things for new couponers without bogging down the verbiage to poor the pants off of you.

One of my favorite topics is chapter 5.  I love to stockpile because it is the hands down best way to save money.  It takes practice and space but you will really maximize your budget if you can accomplish this concept.  But then I get to chapter 6 and 7, strategy and rebates, and those topics are essential in my coupon habit.

I was surprised to find a detailed outline of the three drug stores too!  She describes each of the store’s rewards programs and how to use coupons in conjunction with the store’s program.

Overall the book is a fantastic way to get your feet wet with the wonderful world of couponing.  It can be an intimidating act to someone just starting out but if you know the coupon policies and you are prepared and confident you will be more successful.  To coupon you must plan!

Bouncing Baby Event: Help! My Baby Came Without Instructions Review & Giveaway (Ends 1/2/11)

Make sure to check out the other items featured this month:

Help! My Baby Came Without Instructions: How to Survive (and Enjoy) Your Baby's First Year

I was sent a copy of Help! My Baby Came Without Instructions by Blythe Lipman to review along with the other baby items on my site.  I was also provided with a copy for one lucky winner as well!  All of the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and weren’t influenced by the sponsor in any way.

A one sentence review of this book: This book is awesome!  The way the book is written is straight from one Mom to another and sounds like actual tips I would get from some of my Mommy friends.  Blythe also throws in some funny tidbits from real life stories that had Michael and I chuckling while reading it.

Letting a baby sleep in bed with parents can have a downside.  On my husband’s birthday morning, he was greeted with his little princess having quite the poopy all over our bed.  What a way to say Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Each chapter focuses of different topics like:

  • Crying Babies
  • Sleeping
  • Bathing
  • Feeding
  • Burping
  • Breast Feeding
  • Survival 101
  • ETC

There are three reasons for breast feeding: the milk is always at the right temperature; it comes in attractive containers; and the cat can’t get it

I am sure that some of the tips in the book wouldn’t be helpful for experienced Moms but this is a great alternative to the book ‘What to Expect’ that is popular with first time Mommies.  It is also a great size and I carry it around in my purse to read in the waiting rooms or during free time that I am away from the house.

Blythe has worked with babies for over twenty-five years and has a reputation as one of the top infant care experts of today. Her book “Help! My Baby Came Without Instructions” is filled with valuable tips that new parents need, and aims to have nervous new moms and sleep-deprived dads feeling confident about their parenting skills. Blyth’s book does this through providing the information and resources that facilitate great parenting, such as hints about daily routines, sleep patterns, crying, the art and science of diapering, and traveling with a newborn, to name just a few.

I think that any new Mommy would enjoy this book for a shower gift or just because.  Or maybe someone just has a problem child and needs some new tips to try out that they hadn’t thought of before.

Some great tips in the book include:

  • Put a receiving blanket in the dryer for a few minutes to get it nice and warm.  Swaddle the baby and lay her down in the crib on her side so her back is touching the crib. (Crying Babies)
  • Get them used to the everyday noises in your home from day one.  No tiptoeing or whispering. (Sleeping Babies)
  • Wash from the bottom of the toes up to the head.  Some babies don’t like having their hair washed.  (Bathing Babies)
