8 Tips for Your Baby’s Cold

exergen mothers day giveaway

One of the most maddening things is having a sick child if they can’t talk yet.  You are then stuck with the process of elimination while your little one cries and/or is having trouble breathing. It is heart breaking to feel as helpless as you do the first time your baby gets sick.  I held Michael a lot when he got sick for the first time and I have absolutely no idea if that helped but it made me feel a little better.  Well that is, until he gave me his cold and then I gave it to Daddy Michael!

Sick Mommy  + Sick Baby = Not One Wink of Sleep

I am very lucky and Michael made it to 8 months old before getting a cold.  When he did finally get sick I felt TERRIBLE!  Let me just tell you how exhausting it is to have a sick baby.  Michael was up every single hour for multiple days, it was intense.  Here are some of the tips I picked up for a simple cold just in case you are a first time Mommy too.

  1. Make sure he isn’t running a fever, I love my Exergen TemporalScanner!  I just press it to his forehead and it is done in a matter of seconds!  If you are worried about accuracy I will let you know it reads the same as a thermometer you stick in their ear.  I promise, I have tested both types.
  2. Keep a lot of Boogie Wipes on hand!  These suckers are ah-mazing, promise!
  3. Use a humidifier in his room.  I always keep our Graco humidifier running and the setting is about 50% in his room.
  4. You can try raising/lowering one side of the crib mattress so it is on an angle.  I noticed Michael had a harder time sleeping while laying down flat.
  5. Ask your pediatrician if you can give your baby any medicine to help.  Most likely the answer is no.
  6. You can try some of the baby vapor bath products.
  7. You can try Baby Vicks on your baby’s feet.  I have read about a ton of success stories on the internet from other Moms
  8. Moms that I know have used saline drops successfully but I personally haven’t.  The saline breaks up the snot in their nose and you suck it out with a bulb.

Exergen TemporalScanner is running a great giveaway just in time for Mother’s Day!  Head over to their giveaway page and fill in your information and be sure to select what ‘Mom’ you are entering for.  There is zero shame in picking yourself!  Being a Mom is a tough job.

You can play their instant win game daily and that is as simple as pushing the button and hoping you land on 98.6 degrees!  I got 98.5 degrees. :(

If you are in the market for your own Exergen TermporalScanner I would download their $5 mail in rebate!  If you received yours as a gift you can download this $5 rebate form!

I received my own Exergen TemporalScanner in order to facilitate my review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Don’t Let Postpartum Breasts Control You

post partum breasts

Ladies, I am hear to spill the beans on something you might find depressing.  After you have that beautiful bouncing bundle of joy you are going to be left with these deflated sacs of skin that you used to call breasts.  Think about that one before you go and get pregnant!  (I love my Son and wouldn’t trade him for the world but after all of my babies I am getting a new pair!)

I will be 25 in a few months so I was in my prime before my munchkin came around.  I was a huge anti-bra person if I had a shirt that wasn’t bra friendly.  You might have said I resembled a hippy at times.  I am going to stop you before you suggest a strapless bra because you and I both know that those are not comfortable.  You spend half of your night adjusting yourself and dancing… totally out of the picture.  You might as well just sit in the corner and look pretty.  Don’t even get me started on those girdles!  I couldn’t wait to get that thing off on my wedding day and that was completely unrelated to a ‘honeymoon night’.

When you are nursing your breasts look fabulous because they are firm and full of milk.  While nursing you smell like maple syrup because you never think you are producing enough milk. If you are producing enough milk and get engorged keep your fingers crossed you don’t end up with a plugged duct or an infection… OW!  Then there is the whole drying up portion of breastfeeding and your dirty little secret happens to be the cabbage leaves in your bra.  Don’t forget the pain of drying up!  Yes fellas, it isn’t just our vagina that goes through a traumatic experience… our whole body takes a beating.

There is a product that will help keep you from looking like your 90 year old Grandma in shirts that aren’t bra friendly.  It isn’t a pill, cream or even clear tape holding up your pitiful breasts.  The product is called Strap Tamers and they are used to conceal your bra straps!  So friends, I invite you to pull those super cute shirts out of the closet and brave the beast that is known as postpartum breasts with me!

You will go from drab to fab with this Mom invented product!  Thank heavens for Victoria’s Secret and all she does for women everywhere!  Make sure you check out the giveaway below because this week it includes: Accessory ConnectzStrap TamersBody Bark and On the Cuff.

This giveaway is sponsored by Mompact.com.  This is a product “invented by moms, for moms” and I received this product in order to facilitate my review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Motherhood: 9 Month Update

ava the elephant

Another month has come and gone and I can’t believe I am within 3 months of surviving ONE WHOLE YEAR!  Yes, I said survived.  I might have some killer dark circles to match that Velcro bib stuck to the back of my shirt but I am still breathing.  Motherhood is hard but the things in life that are worth it are hard.  Motherhood is this really cool club where we walk around like zombies with puffs in our hair and don’t care.  What’s that?  You don’t want to join that club?  HA!

One of the hardest things for me from month 8 to month 9 was nap time.  Once Michael learned to walk with aids he became this unstoppable force of energy that would just keep generating energy until he collapsed and turned into a black hole.  Yes, I just related him to something that huge because nap time got THAT intense for a minute.

Tip: When your baby gets tired but is fighting the good fight bore him to sleep.  As you can see from the picture above being in his jumper is just boring enough to knock him out.  Once your baby calms down transfer him to his crib for a beautifully long nap!

Here is another example of nap time just to reinforce what you are in for if you are a first time Mom!  I was visiting Grandpa and Michael was a giant crabby patty but would not go to sleep!

Grandpa: Just put him in the crib and let him cry for 10 minutes.
Me: It won’t work.
Grandpa: Just try.
Me: Fine.

Guess what happened?  Guess who was right?  Not even 2 minutes later he was in Grandpa’s arms because he didn’t expect him to cry like that.  This gave me such a precious moment though! Grandpa and Michael snoozed and Grandpa managed to rock the chair the whole time they slept.  Grandpa has skills and it was priceless.

You know what I get a kick out of?  Watching Michael crawl towards the back of the tub to try and get the shampoo bottle but instead he slides back down to the other side of the tub.  You don’t have to tell me that I am a mean Mommy because I know I have my moments but I wanted to see how determined he was.  I think of it as baby Wipeout and I get to see it live! :)

Tip: Don’t wait until they grow out of their infant tub.  Move them into the big bath tub when they are able to sit up and move around.  Come back and tell me how much you love me once complete.

Yay! Solid foods! He was tearing up these little pieces of ham!  My parenting style is more Oh What the Heck when it comes to trying new things.  How in the world are you going to know something works if you don’t try it?  Ladies… RELAX!  Grandma is supposed to be the crazy worry wort because Lord knows she worries enough for 4 of you.  I was eating some ham one day so Michael got to try the ham.  I was eating meat sauce a different day so Michael got to try meat sauce.  He is a rock solid EATING MACHINE!

Tip: You are the best judge of what is right for your baby.  You are around him the most so don’t let people tell you not to do something, like waiting to start this or that.  Use recommendations as a GUIDELINE not the final verdict!

Most appointments for babies mean shots –>  Most of the time shots mean whiny babies –>  Whiny babies means Mom gets crabby

Michael gets a dose of medicine after his appointments that include shots.  This month he only got 1 and that was his final Hepatitis B shot so I thought he would be fine.  Nope, he was still a bit of a crab apple so I got out this cool Mom Invented product called Ava the Elephant and dosed him with some medicine.

Are there any Shark Tank junkies like me out there?  If so, you probably already know or own an Ava but Ava the Elephant was on Shark Tank for anyone not privy to this information.  Michael loves his Ava the Elephant and she keeps him focused while he gets his full dose of medicine. He needs something to play with or he gets bored and Ava’s ears are perfect!

Find Ava the Elephant on Facebook and make sure you check out their 2012 Model Search on their Facebook page.  If you want your own you should check it out on Amazon because it is under $10 with free s/h!

I am wrapping up our latest month with this funny video!  Have you guys seen the video of the girl getting mad are herself because she can’t sing the song right?  The above video is Michael’s response to her singing.  I was dying laughing inside and felt terrible because he has such a strong opinion about it.  I couldn’t resist getting this video though.  Future Baby Michael your Mother is sorry.  I love you but you crack me up.

Stats:

  • 26 pounds 5 ounces
  • 29 inches long
  • 19 inch head
  • Took 5 steps 3 days before his 9 month birthday

I received this product in order to facilitate my review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Motherhood: 8 Month Update

baby goes outside first time

I know I just did the 7 month update but that sort of gave me the kick in the butt I needed to realize that I need to get back on track!  From 7-8 months Michael has been developing a TON! I swear everyday he learns something new and there is never a dull moment in our house.  On 2/29/12 he learned how to do was climb up the step from the Family Room to the Dinette! As you can see from the picture above he got a little frustrated with himself but he was successful at getting over it.  This is what started it all.  No longer was he trapped in one room.  No longer was Mommy able to turn her back on him.  Nothing was safe unless he was sleeping.  Let the madness begin!

We had a gorgeous weekend here in Michigan, in MARCH, and we all went outside as a family so Mommy could start her vegetables in pots and Daddy could rebuild the lawn mower.  We started him on the porch in his jumper because it was shaded but let me tell all of you that is a terrible idea.  I look up to see how he was doing and him bouncing had wiggled him over to the edge of the porch! (Son of a …) That was a little scary so anyone out there in cyberspace, keep it on one level!  Other than his near cement introduction he loved it.

I had been wanting to see how he would do with a sippy cup since they are advertised starting at 6 months.  So one day I went to get him a bottle and realized they were all dirty.  I guess now is a good time as any to test it out!  He did OK but I think he ate half of it and wore half of it because he did play with the cup while he was trying to figure things out.  It was a great experience but if you want to try it I would stick with the soft top cups because they are the most like bottles, I used a Munchkin sippy cup.  I can only imagine the mess if he had tried a hard top sippy!  I hate old formula smell! Barf!

After Michael mastered the art of climbing over the ledge he decided he wanted to pull himself up on EVERYTHING! He is not happy sitting down at all and had a bunch of falls in the beginning but he is pretty much a pro now.  He used to do the whole stand up, fall back on his butt and whine out of frustration.  Sorry Son but you need to toughen up and figure out how not to fall back on your butt on your own.

This was an awesome time to put the legs on his Fisher Price Music Table because it keeps him entertained at a standing level!  I think that was a great toy for Christmas because he was able to play with it on the ground without the legs and now he can stand up and play with it.  Having a baby in July makes Christmas a little difficult to decide what gifts to buy.

I don’t know what is was about learning to stand but it kicked him into gear and when I would strip him down to a diaper he would crawl the real way instead of the army crawl.  The moment he was back in clothes he got lazy.  It was pretty bizarre.

With his new discovery of standing he now stands in his crib.  The first time we found him doing this was a game night that he woke up in the middle of the night for.  My Sister went upstairs to get him and she came running back downstairs asking me if I knew that he could stand in his bed now!  Her reaction was priceless!  Sure enough we had to lower the mattress so he couldn’t pull himself over the crib but he is still able to reach and stand up.  I need to invest in a crib teething rail ASAP because I can see little bite marks in the railing from his 2 bottom teeth!

I also want to mention that about 3/13/12 he started fighting naps hardcore because he just wants to play now.  Some days you can see the exhaustion in his face but it is go go go still and cry cry cry if you try and put him down.  This is absolutely maddening but I have been lucky with him being a good sleeper up to this point.  He has even fallen asleep in his crib sitting up with his head leaning against the crib rail!

With him learning to get out of the Family Room came a new fascination of PULLING EVERYTHING OFF of anything he could reach!  I used to keep my beautiful stockpile of baby food, formula and cereals on my baker’s rack but it has now been relocated to a closet.  It used to be fun and games and I would let him pull things down and play with them because it was a new experience.  I had to eventually move them because he was getting too strong and daring.  Silly boys.  Daddy would get all sorts of cranky when he would come home and find Michael playing with jars of baby food… blah blah blah.

Do you know why I am forever thankful that my Step-Dad gave me his DSLR?  Well they are expensive to start but also because I get some awesome pictures that I can share with the family.  I can’t tell you how often I get pictures printed out for people because they love photo gifts!  One of Daddy Michael’s favorite gifts was a coffee mug that I got for him from Shutterfly when the baby was first born.  I personally love their photo books because I don’t have a whole lot of time right now to scrapbook with a mobile child!

Springtime & Fertility

let solution sit

Do you know the origin of the Easter Bunny?  Michael and I were interested so we went on a Google search to add more random knowledge to his brain.   He retains just about everything he reads. Pre-Christian it was a holiday worshiping the Goddess Eastre who was the Goddess of fertility with the symbol of a bunny.  Interesting right?

If any of you have been following along with my stories you know that I am not supposed to get pregnant until Michael is potty trained.  How is this for ironic though.  It was Easter weekend, I was ovulating and we tested Michael’s sperm?  Wouldn’t that have just fit perfectly if we would have conceived on Easter?  It all makes sense why it is called humping like rabbits.

Michael was a little nervous to test his sperm with the SpermCheck Fertility test but I told him that it would be better to find out that he doesn’t have a high sperm count now, rather than when we were in the clear to get pregnant.  It is a male ego thing.  We got so lucky with Baby Michael because we conceived my very first ovulation.   Not everyone is that lucky though.

What are some tips you can try at home to help yourself get pregnant?

  • Track your ovulation either the old fashion way with pen and paper or with a free application like Period Tracker. I totally use an app!
  • Track your Basal Body Temperature.
  • Keep ovulation tests on hand just to double check with the above 2 methods.
  • Start taking pre-natal vitamins.
  • Eat healthy foods and maintain a healthy life/weight.
  • Keep your Husband from masturbating so his sperm count isn’t less concentrated.  (Easier said than done right!?)
  • Test your Husband’s sperm with the SpermCheck Fertility test

I would try all of these things before taking the plunge to the doctor’s office.  Fertility checks and medicines can get expensive and uncomfortable.  I now know 2 women in this position and it is hard on them.  I also know one women who has successfully conceived after years of failure.

The test is really easy to do even though the instructions are a little overwhelming.  There are a lot of timings to follow to make sure you do the test right and you don’t want to bruise your Husband’s ego my doing the test wrong!  I liked that the box was equipped with a hole to keep things from spilling, as you can see in the picture above where I am putting the sperm into the test solution.

After you give it a mix and let it sit some more you put exactly 6 drops onto the test, see picture above.  You guessed it.  Then you let it sit some more.  This is the point where Michael was getting anxious because we were almost done.

The verdict is in and I have a relieved Husband! This means he has a normal sperm count of at least 20 million per milliliter. So what are you to do if it comes back negative?

Sperm Tips:

  • Make sure you Husband is eating right and taking the proper vitamins.
  • STOP SMOKING!
  • Just like a women, men need to have a healthy weight.
  • Try boxers instead of briefs to keep the genitals cooler.
  • QUIT MASTURBATING so much! Save your sperm for the mission at hand.

There are many factors that come into play with a man’s sperm and how effective they are such as: count, motility and shape.  We could be here all day if I went into each of these so I will advise you to talk to your doctor if the simple at home tips don’t work for you.

You have a chance to win your own SpermCheck Fertility test right here in the Rafflecopter below!  As an added bonus you should check out their Bring Sexy Back giveaway that is mentioned below. Victoria’s Secret… yes please!

Motherhood: 7 Month Update

8 month shot

I know I am terribly behind since Michael is almost 9 months old but there was no way I was going to cram 2 months worth of updates into one little post.  If I would have then you would be sitting here reading for hours!  Not to mention you know the monthly updates are a photo bomb so a month at a time is plenty. :)

Once he got past 6 months he became so independent.  He would not have anything to do with me rocking him! Occasionally he would give in and fall asleep on me but good grief, it was like pulling teeth!  That is such a bittersweet thing because we get more time to do what we want and need to do but we miss out on those precious moments where they are just completely trusting you. We complain in the beginning but once it is gone we want it back.

We had to take out first traveling trip for my Step Dad’s surgery and we stayed a couple of nights down there with him.  Michael did so good sleeping and staying on schedule!  I was so proud of him!  It really just reinforces the whole concept of watching your baby’s cues.  If you miss one you could be in for a difficult child!  Thank goodness at the time of our trip he was still on a sleep every 2 hours and eat every 2.5 hours schedule.  He threw that all out of the window in recent times but I will touch on that in another monthly update.

Michael got his first tooth 2/1/12 and his second tooth 2/7/12.  (The picture above was taken on St Patrick’s Day but it shows you his cute little teeth.)  I was surprised that it was as easy as it was.  He was only really fussy the day the tooth cut through so I consider myself lucky. By the time I realized what was going on the tooth was through and he was all better.  I have yet to really need teething gels and tablets… YET.

Right now the way I keep track of what pictures to include in my posts is to look through the baby folder on my desktop and go through Facebook to match mobile uploads.  What would I do without Facebook?  I know a lot of people are all up in arms about the Timeline feature but I love it.  I am one of those chronic updaters so I know exactly when something happened so I can put it all together in a post.  The picture above is his outfit for our photo shoot today.  I want to show you this cool product that I just got to keep better track of Michael’s monthly milestones.

Sticky Bellies are simply a sticker that you can put on any piece of clothing to document how old your baby is or how far along in your pregnancy you are.  This is a way cheaper alternative to buying 12 outfits.  Check them out on Amazon to see the different patterns for neutral, boy and girl!

Sticky Bellies Milestone Stickers are really easy to put on the clothing.  I ran into one problem while using them.  He is very mobile right now and I filled up a whole SD card, 300 pictures, trying to get these TWO pictures.  So I was shooting him for a good couple of hours.  During this time he was eating, crawling, walking, climbing and drooling like a champ.  You can see some wear and tear on the sticker.  The drool part was a little harder to peel off but not bad.

There are very few company Facebook pages that I like to follow and for the one reason of engagement.  I love when a brand is personable and Sticky Bellies Facebook Page does a great job of that!  You can also find them on Twitter and Pinterest.

Don’t forget to check out the Mompact giveaway below!  This week you can win a prize pack that includes: LaborLooks Gown, StickyBellies Milestone Stickers, Push Pack and a Double Set Pump-a-Pair (over $155 value!).

This giveaway is sponsored by Mompact.com.  This is a product “invented by moms, for moms”.  I received this product in order to facilitate my review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Spend Some Family Time Playing Cards #TropFloridaOJ

deal the golf cards

With the amount of time spent on social media do you find yourself missing out on the old fashioned family time?  I mean no TV, no computer and no phones family time.  Are you sitting there asking yourself what that means?  I know it can be a pretty foreign topic especially for me being a Blogger and my Husband working in IT!

When we turn everything off and spend time together we find ourselves playing cards.  Playing games together is one of our favorite things to do to unwind at the end of the day.  We love playing the game Golf.  I know there are a lot of house rules but here is a run down of how we like to play.  The object of the game is to get the lowest score after 9 holes (rounds) or 18 holes.  You play with 2 decks of cards until you get 6 or so people then you add another deck.

You deal 9 card to each person in a 3X3 pattern.

To start your hand you have to flip 2 cards over.  From there you can either pick up the card or draw a card.  In this example I will be picking up the 8 to show you what to do.

Since I picked up the 8 I now have to swap it with on of my cards on my board.  For the purpose of this example I flipped over a card and you can see that it is an Ace which is 1 point so that was a bad move.  That is the kicker, you have no idea what is on your board so it is the luck of the draw really.

In the picture above I am showing you 3 Aces in a row.  This means you have zero points. You can either have a row of 3 down or across. This is a great way to collect high point cards because everyone wants to get rid of them.

You can get -25 points if you get 2 rows of three.  This is very hard to do because you are playing with 2 decks so there are only 8 out there!  Go big or go home right?!

An easier way to get -10 points is to get 4 cards in a square pattern.

This is an example of a great golf hand worth -10 points. Kings are the only face value card that you want because they are zero points! I have zero points for my row of 5s and -10 points for my square of Aces.  This is what you are going for but when you are playing against someone who could go out before you time in not your friend!

The way we play is you must turn over a card if you don’t want the card you draw until you only have one card left uncovered.  So I could keep drawing and discarding or swapping until I am ready to flip that very last card.  Once someone flips their last card everyone gets to take one more draw in hopes of something good.

Card games are a lot of fun and get everyone interacting together.  I told Michael that if he wanted to marry me he had to learn how to play our family card game called Group and Run.  As you can see cards are a big deal to us because we have been playing them since the beginning of time together!  So I challenge you to wind down from your work day by a game together.  In our household it can get competitive which in turn leads to flirting which, I think, makes for a healthier relationship.  When you are adjusting to life with a new baby your relationship is usually challenged so any help is welcomed.

Wouldn’t you love to spend some quality family time in Florida?  Well Tropicana is running a sweepstakes right now and you could win just that for you and three guests!  They are also giving 100 winners (12) 59 oz Tropicana Pure Premium® containers!  I would be stoked with that prize because I love Tropicana orange juice!

Florida oranges are by far the best and Tropicana is the single largest buyer by purchasing 11.6 billion oranges a year!  Make sure you like their page because they run some great coupons there!  Tropicana Pure Premium is 100% Pure Florida Orange Juice and I think that is why it is my favorite.  We get oranges from Florida every year because they are THAT good!

Guest Post: Raising Young Children When You Have MS

keep s'myelin

I felt it was appropriate to schedule this guest post today because I will be sitting hooked up to my infusion treatment down in Farmington Hills.  Keep the awareness moving guys!

My children were three and five when Multiple Sclerosis hit me like a freight train going full speed. Overnight, life as I knew it ended. Neither of my children could understand why I could not carry them anymore, especially my three year old.

I started going to MS support groups but, quickly, I gave up on them. The ones in my area had no tips on how to live. They talked about their problems, and I guess that is okay for those who need that kind of support. I wanted to know if there was any way I could still be a mother to my children.

There is a way to succeed, even with MS. It took a lot of trial and error, but I made it. You can, too.

    1. Don’t ask too much of yourself. You have to understand your limitations, so you can work around them. If something doesn’t work, try something else. Cheat, trick, manipulate – do what it takes to get around and get around MS.
    2. The only things that parents are required to do is love their children, accept them, and do the best they can. You are not responsible for the way they turn out. Some children turn out to be supportive and helpful. Others are bitter and angry and won’t lift a finger to help you. Some of those angry children work their way through the bitterness, but many don’t. There are plenty of support groups for children who have lost a parent to death, but I never found one for children who have a parent with a chronic illness. It would have helped. If you can’t find one and have the strength, try to start one. I wish I had.
    3. Cool it. Everyone in my family wears layers of clothing, so I can be comfortable. Heat is devastating to those who have MS, so do what you can to stay where the temperature is comfortable.
    4. Decide what matters to you most, and prioritize you life and the energy you spend. Your strength is limited. Spend it wisely. If you have to work or want to try to continue to work, figure out how you’re going to spend meaningful time with your children. They only grow up once.
    5. If sleep is an issue, negotiate with all interested parties: you, your spouse, and MS. If you decide you need to get up and get the children to school, let your spouse finish up the evening, so you can get to bed early. If that is not possible, finish your evening obligations, get whatever sleep you can, get up and take care of the children and, then, make sure you have allocated the time you need to get the rest of the sleep you need. In other words, split the night if that works for you.
    6. Talk to your spouse and do what it takes to make it as easy as possible for you both. If you are loved by someone, work together against the MS. If you work together, it will be easier to handle.

MS may limit your choices, but you still have choices. Remember, you can start over whenever you want to. If something is not working, change direction, and try another approach. Above all, forgive yourself. The idea that if you can dream it, you can do it is, basically, useless. What you can do is create new dreams for yourself, and never give up.

Marilynne Humphrey has lived with MS for almost 20 years and works from home as a writer often contributing to the health section of www.KeyInsuranceQuotes.com. She still hasn’t given up, but she changes direction quite frequently. In fact, it’s hard to keep up with her. Just ask her family and friends.

You might not think it is much but I appreciate you taking a moment and spreading the word.  I bet if you shared the link on Facebook you just might find that one of your current friends is connected but you never knew.

Here are some of the articles about this disease for reference:

I remember back when Michael and I decided we wanted to get pregnant.  We were just counting down the days until we were married so we could start trying.  I was currently on Tysabri and is it sort of an unspoken rule that you shouldn’t get pregnant on it.  Each month I would go for a treatment I would have to take a pregnancy test just to be sure.  That sort of takes all of the fun out of it though and I didn’t listen!

I stopped taking my birth control in September and we got married October 2nd, 2010.  Well it turns out that tracking your ovulation is a sure fire way TO GET PREGNANT because 12 days later I conceived my precious little baby.  Who would have thunk it? Needless to say my neurologist was not happy.

Now I had to stop Tysabri and taper off of my high doses of Cymbalta and Neurontin.  You might be asking yourself why I didn’t just wait until I was off before getting pregnant?  The plan was to go off for a month and then start trying because Tysabri stays in your system for a month and play each month by ear on how I was doing without medication.  What if it would have taken me months to get pregnant and I just kept getting worse?  What would happen if I relapsed bad from no medication and then the doctor decided I shouldn’t get pregnant because I need medicine?  I will be honest… I was scared of the possibilities.

I felt FANTASTIC during my pregnancy outside of the normal pregnancy things.  I know I mentioned this in another post but I was so happy to be a ‘normal‘ person again.  It makes a person want to be pregnant for the rest of their life to feel that great.  Anyone woman who has been pregnant knows that being pregnant for the rest of your life would suck but it was an improvement for me.  :)

My neurologist obviously had dealt with pregnant women before and said I could get about an 8 week window of symptom free life after the delivery.  OK, that sucks but he was willing to play it by ear with MRIs instead of just putting me back on Tysabri because I really really wanted to breastfeed.  I really appreciated it even though in the back of my head I knew that was best case scenario.

I wish they could just bottle up the hormone present during pregnancy and call that the cure because it is a beautiful thing.

The delivery was relatively easy: 6 hours of labor and 2.5 hours of pushing.  It was quick!  Besides my vagina hurting I thought things would be fine.  Michael went back to work a couple days after we got home.  Fast forward 2 weeks and I started to wonder what I was feeling.  Are these pregnancy related sensations or MS sensations?  One of the symptoms I really wondered about was the fact that my stomach had the dull, numb feeling.  It is really hard to describe but try to imagine wearing a body glove and someone touching you.  I had only had my whole body go numb once when I was 16, when all of my symptoms started.

Next my feet started to go numb and have the feeling of being cold all of the time.  “Oh crap. No way this is happening so soon.” I tried socks and blankets with no luck.  Next to go was my balance and the ability to walk well.  This was about 4 weeks postpartum and I knew I needed to go in for a checkup because I was responsible for walking up and down the stairs with Baby Michael.

Let me just say that pumping sucks in the first place but when you are pumping and dumping it out that BLOWS.  MRIs were ordered and steroids were administered.  I did 3 days of IV Solumedrol and a 12 day pill taper with a 24 hour period after my last dose of dumping.  This trashed, ruined, nearly depleted my milk supply.  I was crushed because I was only producing 4 ounces of milk a day! I started on Copaxone because it was considered ‘safe’ for pregnant and/or nursing Moms.  Sure it is safe but it is a crappy drug.

To bring my milk supply back up I literally ate lactation cookies for 2 weeks straight, took 10 Fenugreek pills a day and kept Michael on my breasts all day long for stimulation.  I was able to get up to 15 ounces with one bottle to supplement a day.  I know breastfeeding is best for babies and I understand why the media talks about the importance of it because if they didn’t stress it then no one would do it.  On the flip side, it makes people who want to breastfeed feel incredibly guilty because they can’t.  I cringe when I hear women say that they don’t think they are going to breastfeed or they don’t really want to… because I am jealous.

One of my last appointments I had with my neurologist he extended my pregnancy plan from 6 months on Tysabri to <<3 YEARS>>!!!  He said I should wait until Michael is potty trained and able to take care of himself more.  OMG devastated once again.  His next comment really made sense to me though, “You don’t want to be a Mom in a wheelchair do you?“.  *Sigh* no I don’t because that would suck.

I will say that even with my leg pain I am pretty happy to be walking again.  I have limitations but my legs aren’t dragging, people trust me to carry my baby again and I don’t look handicap anymore.

Motherhood: Accidents Happen

baby falls down the stairs

What do you think the scariest things are for a Mother?  Something bad happening to their kids of course!  I experienced my first ‘I am a terrible Mother’ incident just this morning.  Both Mother and Baby have recovered from the traumatic event but today Mama is having a glass of wine with dinner!  Luckily Baby Michael only suffered the two marks that you see pictured above and a tiny scratch on his eye lid.  One of those marks is a carpet burn and one is a bruise.  (yes he is chewing on a chicken wing teether!)  I did take him into the pediatrician’s office just as a precaution though!

Michael loves playing with our cats.  The cats hate playing with the baby because he doesn’t pet them, he pulls on them, so they run away.  With Michael getting faster as his all impressive one armed army crawl the cats are running sooner and going places he can’t get to AKA the stairs.  You might be wondering why we are playing upstairs.  Well Michael is bored with the Family Room and wants to explore other areas and items.  The cats are pretty smart and have started to lounge on the stairs versus the floor because he can’t get to them.  Well curiosity killed the cat and sure did rattle our household today.

One minute I look over and my child is playing with the pile of shoes on the floor and the next minute I hear “thud, thud, thud, smack!”  Son of a …!  I can’t run down to the bottom of the stairs quick enough.  I pick up your child who is face down on the tile floor and try not to react.  The overwhelming feeling of guilt starts to creep in but I have to keep my cool because I don’t want to upset my baby.

I take him up to his nursery and try to console this screaming child for 40 minutes before he settled down.  I tried holding him while rocking, playing with toys to distract him from the pain, letting him stand because he loves it and playing with his hand puppet.  Nothing was working.  I took him into my bedroom and tried giving him the remote control to the TV because he loves it.  The remote coupled with the empty tin container I found eventually got him settled down.  That was actually his first drum experience!

My Mom came over and went with me to the pediatrician while my Step Dad installed the baby gate that my Mom had literally brought over THE DAY BEFORE!  He snoozed on the way down there and had a good check up.  Our doctor was very reassuring and I am forever grateful for that.  He said if he had to pick a fall that he would prefer the stairs to falling straight down, like off of a bed.  With the stairs you are breaking the momentum each time you come in contact with a new stair.  With a straight fall you don’t.

Michael passed his exam beautifully.  The doctor examined his eyes, throat and full body for any signs of injury without finding anything to be alarmed about.  Thank goodness!! The bruise on his head wasn’t concerning because it wasn’t a hematoma.  While we were there Michael was all sorts of happy while he was being examined and bouncing up and down on the table.

So Michael is to be monitored for the standard of 24 hours for any abnormal behavior and so far he is just crabby.  He seems a little shaken up because he started to loose his balance while standing and was not happy at all about it!  You could tell it wasn’t anything but being startled.  I will have to check on him in 4 hour increments this evening just to make sure he stirs when I check on him.

I was impressed with the deal my Mom got on the baby gate!  This gate was originally $68 at Meijer and it was marked down for $15!  What a find!  I come by my deal finding honestly because my Mom is pretty thrifty as well. You can see what type of gate I am talking about on Amazon.

This is a gate made especially for stairs because it connects to the wall, as you can see in the picture above.  When we get to the point where we don’t need the gate then we can leave the wall mounts in and remove the door from them to store it.  It is such a nice gate!

In the end Michael is acting pretty normal.  Except he went down for a nap at 5:15 and it is 7:50 and is still sleeping!!  That is going to wrench any sort of sleep I was planning on getting but I am to blame for him falling down the stairs so there isn’t much I can do about it.

I must say that I love my Mommy friends so much.  I felt like a total schmuck today for letting this happen.  It turns out that things like this DO HAPPEN and everyone seems to have a story they aren’t proud of.  My Step Dad had one of his boys fall off of the changing table, my pediatrician had his daughter roll of of the bed (while sleeping) at 9 months and there were many more stories.  I am forever grateful for their stories today because when something like this happens you feel like everyone is going to be mad at you, blame you or judge you.

**Update** Michael did just fine throughout the night, besides going to bed at 5:15 and waking up at 3:50 am!!  I am exhausted already!

DaMory Diapers Review

DaMory Diapers

I sure was nervous to start using a cloth diaper when DaMory Diapers contacted me!  I was excited because of the savings potential and nervous because I had no idea what I was doing. Someone on my Facebook page mentioned I should pre wash them  try help prevent leaking so that is where I started.

I will say upfront that I cheated for my first time using this kind of diaper too!  I put the cloth diaper on him after his daily poop so I knew he wouldn’t poop in it.  Baby steps here!

Someone gave me a tip and said he could leak at the legs if I didn’t make sure everything was positioned right.  It looked like a good seal to me and he is pretty mobile so I wanted to be sure.

It really looked great on him to me.  Almost as great as his rolls.  :)

This was the only part that I was nervous about once I got them on him.  Their size medium goes to 25 pounds and Michael was 22.5 at his 6 month appointment.  I was nervous about this gap at the top and him leaking through the top while crawling around.

Our first try through me for a loop since I am a total beginner!  An hour after I put it on him he was all wet! Hmm… that didn’t seem correct until I realized I hadn’t requested an All in One (AIO).  I was sent a flannel fitted diaper and those don’t automatically come with the waterproof cover but they do have the soaker pad sewn into them.

My overall opinion is that I could do this!  The diapers are just as easy to put on as disposables because they have the Velcro on them.  They are priced great and I can see where the savings comes into play very easily.  I LOVED the soaker pad sewn into the diaper already.  I think we just might cloth diaper our second child  because DaMory made it pretty easy!

Motherhood: 6 Month Update

So much happens on a daily basis now that I feel like I need to do a weekly update sometimes!  It is so mind blowing how quickly Baby Michael is reaching milestones!

  • 22.5 pounds
  • 27.5 inches

We had our first Christmas as a family!  It was so much fun and so hard on Michael!  It was a very long couple of days and he doesn’t like to sleep in public because he is so interested in his surroundings.  My Mother in Law bought him the cutest Santa suit and it was the hit of the party!  He managed to keep it clean from 8am until we got home that night too!

After Michael eats he lounges and watches Mickey Mouse or Yo Gabba Gabba.  Typical male right?!  He is now up to 12 ounces of solid food each day with 24 ounces of formula.  I have no idea if that is right because a lot of pediatricians hold off on solids, outside of baby cereal, until 6 months but I have a big boy on my hands!

I have found that he spits up less now that he is eating more solid foods.  I thought that by giving him solids he would start taking less formula but that isn’t the case at all for him!  I usually give him 4 ounces at the 2 hour mark and wait until he gets fussy for his bottle, which could be anytime in the following hour.

He is now holding his bottle about 70% of the time!  He will typically hold it no problems until he gets fascinated with the TV.  He has a harder time when the bottle gets empty because he doesn’t understand he needs to angle it to get more quite yet.  :) This was the big event that happened during the 5th month!  His ear drum burst and there were little to no signs.  I was trying to get him to sleep in the Pack N Play downstairs because we weren’t 100% comfortable with me walking upstairs multiple times a day alone with him and he kept screaming when I would put him down.  So I figured he was either uncomfortable, hated that it wasn’t his crib or was in pain from teething.

I went and picked him up and his ear smelled a little funny and when I was giving him a kiss I got my nose wet.  So I immediately took a picture of it and posted it in my Mommy group because I thought it was an ear drum bursting but I wanted their opinions.

So off to the Doctor we went!  The Doctor said that a lot of times kids come in with blood in their ears it is from scratches so I was very happy that I took a picture and even he was amazed with the amount of blood from his ear.  This was the first symptom really because he was acting normal when he was awake!  The only time he fussed was putting him down in the Pack n Play.

The more I thought about it I realized that this doesn’t even qualify me as a bad Mom because babies can’t tell you what hurts.  I am a Mom who looks for patterns and writes down feedings and naps so I know what he wants.  I can tell you that he can only be awake 2 hours before getting fussy and likes to eat 6 ounces every 2.5 hours, even if he gets 4 ounces of food.  He acted normal and that is why I didn’t catch it.

For Christmas his Great Granny got him the coolest ties that I have seen for a little boy!  He even has a formal wear bib that he hasn’t worn quite yet.  Just looking at these bibs makes me smile to myself because they are so clever!  In the picture on the left he is watching Mickey Mouse and is so captivated!  That show is amazing outside of the songs that get stuck in your head!  I found a cool tuxedo one on Amazon for $3.99 too!

Michael’s Uncle was home from the Army for the holidays and bought him a cute little Army onesie.  It is so cute how much Kyle enjoys spending time with him.  He is always over when he is home and playing with the baby.  Kyle even watched Yo Gabba Gabba with him while he was over one day.

He is crawling every and LOVES coupons/paper!  He has mastered the Army crawl and almost has the true crawl down.  Right now he rocks back and forth once he gets up to his knees and sometimes will crawl with one knew up but not both.  With the combination of rolling and crawling he gets into everything!

He is now laughing pretty much all of the time!  This video is actually his first unassisted laugh.  I wasn’t even by him and all of a sudden he starts laughing!  I was lucky he kept going so I could get it on camera for Daddy.  He will even laugh at the TV when Mickey is on.  I sure would love to know what goes on in his head!

At his 6 month appointment he had a VEP which is just like an EEG but it plays music and has colorful pictures on the screen.  They hooked of 2 sensors on his forehead and one on the back of his head to read his brain waves.  Apparently there was something abnormal with his left eye so we are going to see an ophthalmologist just to make sure.

He had his shots again this month and is doing so well with them!  The first one he gets he doesn’t cry and then he gets mad for a few of them.  After they are done he is A OK though.  They gave him half of his flu shot instead of Polio this time.  We have to go back at 7 months and get the other half of his flu shot and his Polio shot.  He is in love with that Rotovirus vaccine now because it is like he is eating!

Until next month!

HippMAMA Belt Review

hippmama belt

Recently I was talking to some of my Mommy friends about shopping with a baby.  It is bound to happen because you have to go to the grocery store eventually and not everyone is lucky enough to have family near to play baby sitter while you shop.  The conversation was started when I found an article about infants getting injured or dying because their parents sit their seats on top of the cart. I never though that was the best option but everyone else seemed to be doing it!

So my girlfriend told me how she positions her car seats in the cart to save room so you can get more than a handful of groceries (see picture above). OK- one problem solved.  I still had the problem of that bulky diaper bag!  That diaper bag takes up so much space too and it won’t always fit under the cart.

<Insert HippMAMA Belt>

So what do I really need while I am in the store?  I might need a bottle, diaper, wipes (lets hope not!), burp cloth, a place for my keys, my debit card, ID, phone and my coupons!  The HippMAMA has 5 pouches on the belt and in arms reach.  This belt has actually solved a lot of problems for me so far.  I don’t lose my keys and phone in the diaper bag, I am not digging through my diaper bag looking for things and it saves space so I can fit all of my groceries in my cart.

The one downfall to the belt is that you really have to use pre-made bottles or those ready to feed bottles.  You can’t carry your tub of formula in your belt!  I recently purchased one of those 3 compartment powder formula holders and I love it.  So I had to rearrange my belt from the traditional set up of slots.  I took the diaper/wipe one and made it the one that holds the formula.  It doesn’t fit perfect but it works for me.

These are all of the items that I think are important to have in a store just in case.  (besides my license and debit card)  All of these will fit into the belt and save so much space!

If you don’t like where the pouches are on your belt you can move them.  They have a very simple Velcro on the back that holds them in place.

There is even a ring on the belt for your burp cloth.  I have found that if I am caught without a burp cloth there is going to be a mess!  If I wanted to I could also connect his favorite toy to this ring.  Since it is Winter he has to wear his bear suit and that means his hands are covered so he can’t play with any toys.

There is another hook on the belt for your keys.  I sort of wish jeans came with a belt to hold my keys too :)

Everything fits in the HippMAMA belt and you can tell where I modified it for the formula.  (It is in the bulged pocket.)  since I made a change with the diaper pocket I had to put my diaper in another pocket.  I found that I had to fold the diaper in half to get it into the smaller pocket.

Overall, I think this is a great product for a Mom who needs more arms.  I personally have no experience wearing it with multiple kids because I am not there yet but it is marketed for that purpose too.  I think it is fabulous for the grocery store though!  All you have to do is get over the look of it.  Not because it is ugly, because it is something you don’t see everyday.

You can buy it on Amazon for $29.99 and it qualifies for FREE S/H!

Top 5 Items Every New Mom Should Have

I remember making my registry and I had no idea where to start and I was so overwhelmed that I put 5 of every thing on it.  That presents a problem when people are buying for you because you will end up with multiples.  How do you know what jumper or swing to buy besides going off of your theme?

Not too long after I became a Mom did I make a Mommy Group on Facebook for friends my age with children who are around my baby’s age.  It is such a support system and I highly recommend any new Mom make one or find a friend of yours that has already made one.  You are going to run into so many questions or situations that you want to know about it isn’t funny.  If you get on baby forums like I was then you are going to see every worse case scenario and if you are a worrier you should just stay away.

I kept coming across things that work beautifully and I have said on many occasions ‘why don’t people talk about this?’.  Second time Moms think it is easier because they have been there done that!  Well first time Moms need a break too!  I hope that some of the things on this list bring some relief to a sleep deprived, emotional and frustrated new Mom.  I know there have to be people like me out there who are baby dense and become a Mom and think to themselves ‘now what?’. OK- I was pretty bad so maybe I am one of the few!  :)

Motherhood: 5 Month Update

bumbo seat

The above picture is one of my favorite things I have seen in such a long time!  My Sister was changing Michael and I told her to make sure he was done before changing him.  Sure enough, he wasn’t done and one more push got a bee line of poop right to her pants!  I could not stop laughing for the longest time!

So we finally are getting a Bumbo chair for Michael for Christmas!  Just getting it now is sort of silly though because he has fat thighs.  I knew one of my girlfriends has this same problem and we both have 98th percentile babies.  He love to sit up all of the time so I sit him in his Dad’s recliner so he can pretend he is a big boy.

Now that all he does is roll over he thinks that diaper changes = naked rolling baby.  He is happiest naked for sure!

Michael is teething now and I feel bad for him some days because he gets a little cranky.  He always has his hands in his mouth and/or toys.  As you can see from the picture he even put his friend’s fingers in his mouth!  I rub his gums when he puts mine in his mouth  and he seems to like that.  I haven’t used the teething gel yet but it is out on the stand so it is easily accessible.

My Great Grandmother passed away and at her showing I found this baby picture of myself in one of her books.  I would have to say my baby is fatter than I was, especially in the cheeks, but you can still see a major resemblance.  And I thought I was a fat baby!  :)

He just loves to eat now.  Since I got the OK at his 4 month appointment I try to feed him a fruit, vegetable and some oatmeal everyday.  He has tried plenty of foods now and we are on pumpkin that I made this week.  Feeding solids so often has also decreased his spitting up.  He is still eating about 24 ounces of formula a day in addition to his solids.

I am so happy that he is finally pooping regularly though!  Pooping only on formula was a painful ordeal for him.  He would get all red faced and whine while he was.  Formula only poops came about every other or every third day and were very dark.  Now he is going every day, the stools are looser and sometimes you can tell what color the vegetable was that he ate!  Oh the things Motherhood makes you excited for!  haha

If you don’t know me personally you might not know that my Husband is a giant computer nerd.  He is in the IT industry for his profession and everyone goes to him for computer problems.  I thought this picture was precious because Little Mike wants to be like Daddy. I am probably to blame for his interest in computers though.  I let him watch and spin the Superpoints button a lot so he thinks it is OK to play with it.

I think I am going to try and do a monthly update versus waiting two months because there are so many things going on now! He has already done some milestones that I am saving for his 6 month update!  He has already started giving me mobility problems because he rolls around the family room if I set him down.  You would be surprised at how quick the roll to the other side of the room.

Until next month!

Motherhood: 4 Month Update

baptism

Well Little Michael turned 4 months on Saturday and Sunday was his baptism and our first Thanksgiving at our house!  I am waiting for the pictures from the church of him or I would post one.  That is the only downfall of not taking the pictures yourself, you have to wait for someone else to get the pictures to you.  :)

Stats:

  • 18 pounds 13 ounces
  • 26.5 inches long

Edit: My Father in Law awesomely sent me a picture to prevent me from going crazy because I hadn’t seen any from the church.

This month flew by and was very very busy!  Here are the highlights.

We weaned from breast feeding in 2 weeks and it was hard on him.  He has been spitting up so much of his formula that I have had to start changing his clothes, washing the blankets more often and I am burning through burp cloths like crazy.  The funniest and grossest thing to happen since he started spitting up all of the time was him spitting up right into my mouth!  It tasted like bile and spoiled milk and he was so upset that I had to tried my hardest not to puke myself.

The doctor did say that I could start him on solids since he is such a big boy: cereal, veggies and fruit!  The doctor mentioned it could be a milk intolerance and I could try soy to see if that helped him or it could be mechanical.  The heavier solid foods could help with the spitting up as well.

His vaccines at his 4 month appointment were a little rougher than his 2 month ones.  It was easier for him to take the rotovirus vaccine this time because he didn’t automatically push it back out and gag.  I attribute that to the fact I have been letting him try solids and use a spoon so he is more used to swallowing.  His Dad actually stayed to see him get his shots this time and become inconsolable.  Too bad it didn’t stop all evening.  Poor guy :(

He is getting closer and closer to crawling as you can see in the video below!  He does a good job rolling front to back and back to front though.  He might get really frustrated but he has mastered the art of spinning around!  I will set him down one direction and sure enough he will be pointed the opposite direction!

My girlfriends and I have been having play dates since our babies are so close in age.  Kaleb is 12 days older and Kaitlyn is 24 days older than Michael.  Here are some of the cute shots of them sharing tummy time!

So far Michael has tried pumpkin, green beans, potatoes and bananas!  The Mommies to the above babies and I are making and swapping baby food so we have more variety for our little ones.  We have freezers full of carrots, squash, green beans and pumpkin!  It is so much cheaper than buying baby food.

For most of the month he was sleeping 9 hours a night and just recently had a few hiccups.  I think he is adjusting his sleep schedule right now.  He got congested and was going to bed at his normal 10pm then waking up at 3am for 30 minutes and going back down until about 6am which sucked!  Now he has been going to bed between 9pm and 1015pm instead of his normal 10/1030 bedtime.  So Mom is just adjusting to his new schedule- roughly.

I just learned how to use his snot sucker too!  My Mom had to show me how to get it to really work but he hates it even more now.  Apparently it works better if you push it in and then tilt it up a little so it is sort of pointed towards the floor.

Until next month!

Motherhood: Ridiculous Parenting Products?

One of my friends in my Mommy Group shared a link to Parenting’s website that listed a bunch of ridiculous parenting products.  I totally agree with some of them but I must confess there are a few that I would have wanted to splurge on.

They start off with a helmet for kids to play in and an infant pillow that is bizarre and slightly creepy looking. (see above) Some of these things are just funny things I know parents get mainly for themselves but stuffed hands to rest again your infant?  Really?

I think the placenta teddy bear is by far the grossest and weirdest thing I have ever seen though.  Here is the quote that they included with this teddy bear:

What’s more cuddly than a placenta? Not only must you cut, cure and emulsify the organ, you have to actually sew it into the teddy bear using this kit.

I still think it would be cool to have a special hospital gown if I was to be in the gown for the duration of my hospital stay after having a baby and that was on their list because you don’t really NEED it.  For this baby my Mom bought me a new robe and night gown because it was cheaper than those gowns.  There was no way I was sitting in that drab gown for three days!

What are some of the things you think are just ridiculous for parents to get?

Motherhood: 3 Month Update

chapped lips

Can you believe how fast kids grow up?  I do not know how I have managed to survive 14 weeks now!  Last week was his official 3 month birthday and we measured him for grins and he has grown 2 more inches!  He is now 26 inches long and in 6-9 month sleeps because he is too long and his feet are too big!

I did go to a Mom 2 Mom sale last weekend and got a great deal!  I spent $22 on 22 clothing items and that awesome Boon Frog Bath Scoop!  That bath scoop only cost me $5 and that thing can retail for about $35!  The woman that sold it to me also sold her Bumbo and tray for $10 but I wasn’t the lucky person for that prize.  If you are smart you will only buy clothes from these sales because they outgrow everything so quick!  I rarely buy him full priced clothes unless it is something really cool like the My Aunt is the Best onesie I picked up the other day.

He is even starting to be too big for size 2 diapers but I am finishing out the pack of 100 that I opened just so they don’t go to waste!  He grew out of diaper sizes so fast (newborn 1 month, size 1 a month and size 2 a week longer than 1 month).  I had no idea that it would be that quick when I was stocking up on diapers and I messed up with the whole planning thing.  I had 14 jumbo packs to exchange because they are size 1 and 2.  Apparently babies in my Mommy group stay in size 3 for a while so I should be good since I have about 4 months of that size and 10 more packs I can exchange.

Little Mike is now rolling over and playing in his Jumperoo too!  The rolling over thing is cute during the day but it is presenting a little problem at night because he will pull himself out of the swaddle if I am only using the wrap and not the full swaddle sack.  He had outgrown his swaddle sacks so I was just using the swaddle portion from my Halo swaddle and he is too smart for those.  So I finally ordered him a size large, it goes to 22 pounds, so he will still sleep good at night.

He is still confused on night and day sometimes which can be very tiring but he will get it one day!  Last night was beautiful because he slept 9 hours straight!  That gives me a chance to write some things since I am not sleeping every nap time during the day.  He normally goes to bed between 10pm and midnight which makes for a lot of sleeping all morning and some of the afternoon.

My poor guy has chapped lips!  It looks like he was in a fight or we just aren’t good parents but I swear he woke up one morning looking like this!  He has two little cracks in his lips and my Mommy group said they have used Vaseline on their babies so I am thinking I am going to give that a try.  We did set up his humidifier in his room because he was sounding a little dry when breathing too so that could just help without putting anything on his lips.

Now that he has all sorts of rolls he is getting these chaffing spots in between them on his neck.  I first noticed it because he smelled TERRIBLE!  And he even smelled bad after I had given him a bath so I was so confused.  It turns out that these spots around his neck were smelling like moldy crotch, gross.  I am so happy to have figured that out and after I wash his neck I put him down for tummy time to air it out.  He loves tummy time now that he is wanting to move around everywhere.  All these things you don’t find out until you have the baby!

Weight loss is still maintaining at a great number of pounds lost but I can not wait to be able to go to the gym and tone this body back up!  With Halloween candy in the house and the fact that I can’t walk all that well I am terrified that I am going to start gaining weight and lose all of my progress!  This midsection leaves a lot to be desired for a woman who likes to be toned!

Breast feeding is still going OK and I am still supplementing with formula.  I have days where he only gets two bottles (10 ounces) and sometimes he gets three bottles (14 ounces).  Usually he takes his first bottle in the afternoon because he is just very very unhappy that nothing is coming out of Mom.  Breast feeding is a lot of work but bottle feeding is way more work in my opinion.  I hate washing bottles and buying formula!

Until next month when he has his 4 month check up and more vaccines!

Motherhood: Secret Shopping With a Baby

This is a two part post.  I am writing before my shop and updating after I have completed my shop.  I figured that this would just be easier for any Moms out there to find the information if the before and after is just in one post.

Before:

I love secret shopping (mystery shopping) and it is a ton of work without a child but I am going to attempt the unspeakable and take my very well behaved child on a shop!  I am attempting a shop for a company that I have completed multiple times already so I remember the requirements in my sleep.  I do not recommend attempting a very complicated and new shop with an infant because that would defeat the whole concept of details details details.

I also want to point out that some of the shops will specifically state DO NOT BRING CHILDREN so be sure you are not breaking the rules!  It does make sense why you wouldn’t bring a little one but I have been doing this for years so I am not a spring chicken when it comes to shops.  That still doesn’t mean I don’t forget things on occasion but you aren’t anxious when you are past the newbie stage.

This shop consists of two parts: phone call and on site visit.  So I will be completing the phone call during a nap time or while he is sitting in his jumper play thing.  I am finally getting him to sit longer without me entertaining him so I can get some work done!  It isn’t very long that he stays entertained so I get the bare minimum of time to respond to a few emails to keep my work afloat.

After:

The shop went off without a hitch!  He was very well behaved and I wore him in my Moby carrier so I could have my hands free and keep him happy.  I don’t think anyone even thought twice about the fact that I was carting around my baby.  He sure does attract attention though!  That would be the only downfall to the whole idea of shopping, you don’t want to be remembered.  Everyone remembers a cute baby!

The hardest part for me was getting the report logged online in the time restraints.  Little Mike was a little cranky after being gone running errands all day so my first priority is to tend to his needs.  So I was lucky and my Husband came home and entertained him so I could get my information submitted from the shop!

I think it is possible to shop with an infant but I think you really have to be on top of your game.  You have to really know everything you are looking for so you don’t mess up.  I would have had a greater level of difficulty had he started to get fussy and need tending to.  You are the Mom so you can make the best decision for you and your family is what it boils down to.  I probably won’t do any girls clothing stores just because I wouldn’t be able to keep him in his carrier.
